Event Details

There are enormous changes taking place in the energy sector around the world, in North America and in Canada. These changes are being driven by three dominant considerations:  

  • the need for more energy production to feed continuing economic growth and development around the world
  • the need to make any society more energy efficient to stay competitive on the world global economy
  • the need to make real progress in reducing impacts from greenhouse gases, arising dominantly from burning fossil fuels and associated release of gasses to the atmosphere.

In Canada, the role of the energy sector assumes special importance. Canada has a rich endowment of energy resources, which will be important for driving its own economic growth and development, while also being one of its dominant exports to feed an energy hungry world. The Canadian economy is also energy intensive as it is still based on natural resources extraction and transformation and manufacturing. On the other hand, Canada has major challenges, along with other fossil fuel producing and consuming countries, to achieve rapid progress in addressing the greenhouse gas challenge and associated climate change impact. There are major ongoing initiatives across Canada in addressing these and related energy challenges.

In this context, and in cooperation with the World Energy Congress to be held in Canada in September 2010, the Energy Council of Canada is holding a series of Energy Forums, the purpose of which is to collect information on Canada’s accomplishments and future plans for presentation at the forthcoming World Energy Congress, MONTREAL 2010. Each half a day Forum will focus on a specific region of Canada and its prime emphasis will be on obtaining, from governments, industry and various stakeholders, perspectives and planned actions to address present and future energy challenges.

It is intended that participants for the respective Forums will be senior representatives from government, industry and stakeholders. This will allow dialogue to be primarily strategic and policy oriented and to be visionary, constructive and pragmatic in terms of addressing the overwhelming challenges being faced by the energy industry in global, regional and national contexts.

Le secteur de l’énergie est en mutation aux échelles tant mondiale que nord-américaine ou canadienne. Ces changements profonds sont déterminés par trois facteurs dominants 

  • La croissance économique et l’industrialisation à l’échelle mondiale réclament une production accrue d’énergie.
  • Toute société qui veut rester concurrentielle dans l’économie planétaire a intérêt à être plus éconergétique
  • L’urgence de réduire concrètement l’impact des gaz à effet de serre impose de freiner la consommation de combustibles fossiles, principale source de GES.

 Au Canada, le secteur de l’énergie assume un rôle primordial en la matière. Les ressources énergétiques dont regorge le Canada sont essentielles à la croissance économique et au développement intérieurs, et constituent un produit d’exportation par excellence compte tenu des besoins énergétiques dans le monde entier. L’économie canadienne est elle-même énergivore, du fait qu’elle est principalement axée sur l’extraction et la transformation de ressources naturelles et la production de biens. Par ailleurs, le Canada doit, à l’instar des autres pays producteurs et consommateurs de combustibles fossiles, composer avec les défis considérables de la maîtrise des gaz à effet de serre et de leur incidence climatique, et plusieurs initiatives ont été prises à cette fin. 

 C’est dans cette optique que le Conseil canadien de l’énergie, en collaboration avec le Congrès mondial de l'énergie prévu en septembre 2010, anime une série de forums canadiens sur l’énergie. Le but de ces forums est de faire l’inventaire des réalisations et des projets canadiens en la matière, afin de les présenter au Congrès mondial de l’énergie Montréal 2010. Chaque forum durera une demi-journée et se consacrera à une région particulière du Canada. L’objet premier des forums sera d’obtenir que les gouvernements, les ténors de l’industrie et les différents intervenants communiquent leurs perspectives et leurs plans d’action quant aux préoccupations courantes et à venir.

Idéalement, les participants de ces forums devraient représenter la haute direction des gouvernements, des entreprises et des principaux intervenants. Le dialogue sera ainsi essentiellement axé sur la stratégie et l’établissement de politiques, et il permettra la recherche de réponses innovantes, constructives et pragmatiques aux énormes défis du secteur de l’énergie, aux échelles mondiale, régionale et nationale.
